Because if Charlie leaves, it is heavily speculated that Jimmy Clausen would leave too. Jimmy came to Notre Dame, being recruited by Weiss, and came largely to play for Weiss; now it is said that when Weiss leaves, Clausen will too (to go to the NFL). And also, it is said if Clausen leaves, then Golden Tate would too to enter the draft. And maybe Armando Allen would follow suit? (probably not though) Do you think they should keep Weiss around one more year? By doing so, it would likely keep next years top Heissman Candidates at Notre Dame.

Truthfully, It would only hurt Notre Dame financially.

I think Charlie Weis would be an excellent coach else where. The problem I have and had with Weis is that his teams (Whole team) were really prepared to play. It seemed like his only focus was on the offense. When he became a coach, the offensive mindset should have been gone and focus on building an all around football team. The next coach they hire needs to be someone on the staff already and they must be an all around knowledgeable football guy. By picking a guy on the staff already, players are not likely to leave early. Notre Dame needs to give this person time to build an identity for the program. Notre Dame can be a winning program again, they just need to be patient and be careful with who they choose.

    Weiss is just a scapegoat.

ND has a become a completly mediocre team, that people constantly expect to be a top 25 team. They have to realize ND is basically a joke these days.

If they fire Weiss,Notre Dame better go after a big name coach or nothing matters.

Jimmy Clausen is leaving no-matter what happens.

Weis is holding ND hostage financially already, Now they’re trying to hold ND’s talent hostage.

#1 Jimmy Clausen is going to leave anyway. Weis isn’t the deciding factor. The deciding factor is projected draft position.
#2 Keeping Weis around for a lame duck season will hurt recruiting for the next class as nobody will commit to a coach who isn’t going to be there.
#3 With Weis, Clausen, Tate, and Floyd they’re still losing. Tim Brown was already there when Holtz arrived. A new coach could uleash the languishing Irish talent.
